ANTI-POACHING

The Mkuju River Project

The Mkuju River Project site borders the Nyerere National Park (former Selous Game Reserve) – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the wake of the frustrating poaching situation in 2013, Mantra Tanzania Limited which operates Mkuju River Project underscored the need for highly effective and efficient anti-poaching strategies for containing poaching in the reserve. Mantra believed that anti-poaching approaches need to be very strategic and should exalt and actively involve the surrounding communities. To help address the poaching crisis, Mantra decided to strongly support the anti-poaching efforts in Nyerere National Park and prioritized conservation and protection of wildlife in the project area to be its mainstay commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility. Mantra in cooperation with the Government of Tanzania has launched an anti-poaching program as a special Public-Private Partnership in wildlife conservation in Tanzania whereby a mining company is involved in wildlife protection. The program, which employs advanced tactical training and technologies, has trained elite scouts (trained and equipped by Mantra), regular anti-poaching patrols, and informant networks embedded in the local communities.
